While photography is all about the play of light, both artificial and natural, I am more biased towards natural light.
Working with natural light is a dare. It’s so unpredictable, so raw and yet so beautiful. Any attempt to tame it in your picture and use it to your advantage is a great feat achieved. My work in the field of maternity and baby photography makes me travel to different places. I chose to shoot the newborn genre predominantly in the comfort of the clients home. Which presents a next challenge- Light!
It is wonderful that sometimes good light can be found in unexpected places. Every time I go to a new place for a shoot, its like a fresh blank canvas and an opportunity for me to make the best use of what is available and speak out a narrative through the images I create. Simple pointers that I look for while working with available natural light is
- Window light
- Catch light
- Shooting against the light
- Dramatic shadows
- Reflected light
- Golden hour light
- Diffused light
Finding great light can be clever, minor changes in angle or position can often have a dramatic effect and can alter the mood of a photograph by leaps and bounds.
